About BBJ Kolkata

The early story of BBJ started around the mid-thirties to address the ever increasing traffic between the twin cities of Calcutta (now Kolkata) & Howrah by replacing the then existing pontoon bridge with a wider & stronger Balanced Cantilever bridge across the river Hooghly. So the three prominent engineering entities "Braithwaite, Burn & Jessop" came together with their vast experience and floated a new company on 26th January 1935 - The Braithwaite Burn & Jessop Construction Company Limited (BBJ).

The onward march began with the construction of Howrah Bridge or Rabindra Setu (1936-1942, opened to traffic on 03 Feb 1943). The second Hooghly Bridge (Vidyasagar Setu) was constructed from 03 July 1979 to 10 Oct 1992. In between BBJ has, in its record, a number of engineering landmarks spread across the India.

BBJ incorporated under the Co's Act, 1956, became a subsidiary of Bharat Bhari Udyog Nigam Limited (BBUNL) on 13 Aug 1987. By order of the Govt. of India, The BBJ and BBUNL were amalgamated w.e.f. 10th July, 2015. Vide Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Govt. of India certificate issued by the office of the Registrar of Companies, Kolkata, West Bengal, the amalgamated entities are known as ''The Braithwaite Burn and Jessop Construction Company Limited".

BBJ's achievements are amply evident in India's major Rail Bridges linking East with West and North with South. Since 1987 BBJ has built over 200 Railway Steel Bridges. The Ganga Bridge at Mokameh, Godavari Bridge at Rajamundry, Krishna Bridge at Vijawada, Brahmaputra Bridge at Jogighopa & Saraighat and Ganga Bridge at Munger (all Rail cum Road Bridges) are some of the very well-known achievements of this company.

BBJ has also been involved in construction of major steel plants, thermal power stations, oil refineries, fertilizer projects. BBJ has also undertaken restoration of damaged bridges, fabricated industrial structures and civil construction of major commercial and administrative buildings.

BBJ is utilizing the most modern equipment and technology, with high degree of expertise and substantial in-house resources, employing above 72 people in its permanent cadre, while at any time engaging more than 1000 engineers, technician and worker at various project sites.
